In Sicily, the almond harvest is as traditional as olive and grape harvests. This unique experience will enable you to harvest almonds in the beautiful Sicilian countryside; to enjoy sampling traditional Sicilian food, and to wind-down and spend time with the Ciulla family on their organic farm.
Almond picking usually starts in the last week of August or first week in September. The day begins with a delicious breakfast around the family table. You then spend the day in the almond orchards (a short stroll away) amongst age-old trees with a view you just can’t help staring at.
Picking the almonds starts after nets are laid out under each tree and sojourns at lunchtime with ample time to enjoy a sumptuous picnic and the family’s home-made organic wine underneath the almond tree canopy. The almonds need to be shelled using a small tractor-mounted machine and then packaged – a process you can also be involved with if you wish. The day ends with a traditional three course meal, back at the farmhouse.
The choice is yours. The almond harvest is carried out at a pace that everyone can enjoy with time for chatter, laughter, and even contemplation. You can choose how long you want to pick the almonds for and how many days you would like to be involved with the picking. On the days that you want to relax you can visit the famous Valley of the Temples; unwind by the pool or visit the many beautiful beaches nearby.
