This a week that you will never forget. Harvesting organic grapes and making organic wine is deeply embedded in Sicilian culture, and will connect you to Sicily’s rich fertile soil, its traditions and past.
Sicilian grapes are traditionally grown using an upright bush-training method (rather than on trellises). Four grape varieties, unique to Sicily, are cultivated organically at Feudo Muxarello. The famous red wine they serve at their communal dinners is produced from Nerello cappuccio and Nero D’avola grapes; while their refreshing white wines hail from Inzolia and Grillo varieties. All four grape types are able to cope with hot Sicilian summers, and as they receive no irrigation their roots have to work hard and venture deep into the soil, giving the wine in this terroir its unique, delicious flavour.
Grape picking, starts in the last week of August or the first week in September. The day always begins with a generous breakfast shared around the family table, followed by a gentle stroll down the hill to their vineyard, where you will spend the day amidst the old grape vines.
The grapes are first picked by hand – a peaceful, meditative experience. After this music is turned on and the fun really begins as the grapes are crushed by your bare, dancing feet in large oak barrels. After the grape crushing is finished, the juice is ready – without the need to add sugar, yeast or sulphites - and left to mature naturally in the oak barrels.
The choice is yours. Inevitably, true to Sicilian culture the days will be filled with lively conversation, laughter, perhaps a bit of singing, not to forget the delicious organic food – lovingly sourced from and prepared on the farm – and a generous helping of wine. This is because harvesting the grapes and making wine is carried out at an enjoyable pace. You can choose how many hours and days you would like to be involved. On the days that you want to relax you can visit the famous Valley of the Temples; unwind by the pool or visit the many beautiful beaches nearby.
